Trivia Tuesdays and a stormy forecast

Last week’s answer: False.

During the 1950s, Bill Klein became a chief tester for Head’s popular metal-edged ski.   Howard Head offered Klein a one-fourth interest in his company for $15,000, but Klein declined.  Head later sold his business for 9 million dollars.

This week’s question:

To save money, prisoners from San Quentin helped to install the footings for the 13 towers on the Mt. Disney chairlift in 1939.  True or False?

P.S. There’s finally SNOW in the forecast!  Do your dances!

Terrain is OPEN!

No Disney on Thursday as predicted, but we did get it Friday and a ton more.  Patrol has been blasting a bunch and we got to reap the rewards.  Disney, then the rest of Disney (except Nancy’s and Sugar Bowl).  On the Lincoln side, Silver belt, ’58’s and the Sisters.  Wow.  It’s still bony and early season, but off-piste options have really opened up.

Looks like Judah opens today, maybe J-Bowl and/or Sugar Bowl?

Watch out for leopards!

Pow day Monday!

Easily the busiest I have seen Sugar yet this season, and crowded and claustrophobic for a minute in the pre-opening Jerome line, but everyone spread out pretty quickly after that.

What a pow day!  I sure needed that.  Not too much new terrain just yet even though there were blasts going off all morning… Klein’s.. and upper Lakeview reopened.

Disney was spinning (not open) in the afternoon.  Official unofficial prediction is a Thursday opening.  🙂

Storm skiing!

Well, I sure forgot how tough it can be to ski the storm.  New this season: wet mask.  Yuck.  See you tomorrow for bluebird Monday!

Opening weekend!

It happened!  Springtime conditions in November.   Definitely thin and bony out there, but lots of fun to be had.  Dreaming of bottomless turns in the eponymous Sugar Bowl, until then, going big in Two-and-a-half Chutes will have to do.  🙂

Ten suns in the forecast today… do your early season snow dances!!

Opening this Friday!

Opening day is almost here!!  Better not eat too much tofurkey this holiday, because you’re gonna be up bright and early Friday!

Looks like Jerome will be spinning, and Hard Drinkin’ Lincoln too!

Sugar was selling some day tickets, but they’re already gone for opening day and weekend.

Ready to get your Sugar Gnar on, friends?  I know I am for sure.  See you in five days!

Back again after all this time!

Hi Sugar friends!  Hope everyone is healthy and well in these strange times!

Obviously the abrupt end to last season dashed our plans for the fifth annual closing day cave party… and the intervening summer has been one hell of a ride.

Well, never fear, the Unofficial Sugar Bowl Ski Team is here, waxing our gear and watching the weather.  Opening day is just around the corner.

Stay safe… see you soon!

How to watch the weather

While we’re all waiting anxiously for Sugar Bowl’s opening day in one week (we’ll see you there), I thought I’d share the best way to watch incoming storms and get your stoke on.

First up is the Tahoe Daily Snow, where you can find BA’s great snow- and mountain-specific reports for the area, and fun geeking out on the forecast models, historic precipitation, and all things snow.

Second stop is the Weather Underground’s Serene Lakes station forecast, which is right next to Sugar Bowl.  The 10-day graph is my go-to for visualizing when and how storms come in.

And lastly, be safe out there and always check Sierra Avalanche Center daily advisory before heading out the boundary.

See you in a week!

We’re back, baby!

That’s right.  We’re back for the 2019/2020 season!  We’ll be tagging lifts, crushing pow, breaking trail and, most importantly, having FUN!

No snow in the forecast just yet.. Sugar says they’ll open in one month, on November 29th.  Let’s hope a storm brings us an earlier date.

What is Unofficial Sugar Bowl?  It’s a ski team, a website, a community, an annual closing day cave party, an attitude, a lifestyle.  🙂

Also time for our annual reminder that Unofficial Sugar Bowl is YOU!  Wanna share your pics or video?  Post about conditions?  Have opinions on operations, coaches, local politics, who makes the best bloody?  It’s all fair game.  Get in touch and I’ll be happy to make you an account so you can post too.

Fourth Annual Closing Day Cave Party!

Yeah, we haven’t been posting much.  But you can rest assured, the Unofficial Sugar Bowl Ski Team has been out there, charging the Palasades on their opening day, breaking the trail out to Roller, coaching folks down the Sisters, representing at the Banked Slalom, pushing the boundary at Crow’s, and working on our goggle tans taking safety breaks.  😉

In celebration of this amazing season, please join us for our fourth (wow!) annual closing day cave party!  We’ll be rocking the tunes, bring something to share or just yourself and good vibes!

When: Sunday, April 21st

Where: Disney cave

See you there!
